North Country Malt Club Order

As I mentioned at the meeting North Country Malt sells to hombrewers. You can order just a bag or a half/full pallet. By the bag you pay Fed-Ex rates, but a pallet is $85. You can download a catalog here.

Look for the link on the left. They sell grain, hops, and chemicals. Check it out and think about maybe doing something late summer/fall.

For specialty grains that you don't need a whole bag of consider splitting one between a few people. I also bumped up the post about specialty grains I have. I think Brian and Dave have some too.

I've ordered from them before. They've got a great selection, much better than Briess. Do you need to have it delivered to a loading dock to get a pallet?

You don't need a loading dock actually. You can request a lift gate (extra small cost). Or you can take it off the truck bag by bag and re stack it. That option sucks but I've done it many times.

I use Saia motor frieght when it gets here to town. They have been the most reliable with the lift gate. You can request them too when you place the order.

I would be interested in getting a few bags of some malt. I think there is a midwestern version out of Chicago now too.

Count me in on the order too. Anyone want to split a bag of DME? I would also probably get a bag of 2-row, and if people want to go in on specialty grains I want in on that too. I could use some caramel 10 and 40, and maybe a little pale chocolate. Everything else I use in small quantities too, so I'd be down for at least a few pounds of anything really.

An interesting thing to do as a club might be to start a sort of coop. We could buy bags of the more common specialties, then people pay as they use them. If we needed storage space I've got plenty, as well as pallets etc. I'd volunteer to help coordinate/manage it if no one else wants to deal with it.

Randy unfortunately the COOP type thing has been done before and did not work out so well. Brain and Dave tried this a couple of years ago, they bought 50 pound bags of many of the specialty grains that they had to eventally throw out due to age.

However, with that said I think there is wiggle room here for some of your more common specialty grains for a group to go together to purchase and split a bag. For example, take the 40L crystal or carmal that is one of your more common specialty grains and to purchase 5 - 7 lbs should not even last a year for many brewers. Usually that is about 3 brews for me as many recipes use 40L crystal.

I guess I am putting forth here if you have any interest at all on splitting a sack of some of your more common specialties. Post the information here. That way others know what your hunting for and we will see if we can put together enough for the purchase of a sack.

I want to get this ball rolling as I need to save some $$ on malt purchases now that I'm doing partial mashes. I'm willing to coordinate the purchase if needed. I can also arrange the shipping through Redpaw which may be cheaper as we've got pretty good rates.

Here's what I want:

Briess Extra Light DME, 1/2 bag to whole bag.

OK I downloaded the price sheet from their web but found out it was 2008 pricing, so I had them fax me an updated list, and attached that here. Note we can also buy by the pound. It's quite a bit cheaper to buy the whole bag, but their per/# prices are still better than NB.

I also have their commercial pricing that they said we could qualify for if we order a full pallet of 40 bags. I can't post that here, but figure a savings between 5-10 cents per pound depending on what you get.

Also keep in mind that shipping will probably run about $70-85 for the order regardless, so the more we order the less per pound that adds to each item.

I will think about it. Did you know the price we pay for our Bries stuff is less than Midwest Brew Supplies and Northern Brewer? Nice.
