There's a guy here in town selling 4-6L flasks on Ebay. I emailed and he said local pickup is ok. They are from Red Star so they should be good for starters. He also said he had more lab glass.

As a reference, a new 5000 ml flask from the homebrew shops is usually $40. I got mine for $20 when they had a sale. There is probably a chemistry supply place online that has them for less than the homebrew shops.

It's hard to even find a large one new online right now.

I bought the 6L flask. He said he has more lab glassware. When I pick it up tonight I will see what he has and see if he wants to put it up for sale on the website. These flasks will come in handy if we get the stirplates this week.

Picked up my flask and met Rob, a process superintendent at Red Star Yeast. He was a homebrewer in Georgia before moving here and is still interested in it. He might be avaliable to do a yeast culturing meeting for us.
He has a ton of glassware and is willing to deal. I gave him a club card and my email. If anyone wants a flask of any size let me know.

Jesus must have been a yeast. Who else could turn water into wine?

He's going to be gone this week, but I'll get hold of him next week. It looked like he had flasks from 250-6000 ml. If we get the stirplates a flask is the easiest way to go. You can boil right in them so there is no stanitation issues.
He said he hasn't brewed since he moved here 2 years ago. He still has all of equipment and talked about getting back into it. Maybe we'll see him around.

Actually even without a stirplate a flask is great for making a starter. 1 yeast pack in a 1000ml starter will double your yeast.

Tom, could you hook me up with him, sounds like he might have everything I need to start yeast culturing. Which is my next thing.

I'd like to get one 3-4 liters. I had a 5 L KIMAX that I boiled my starters in. Even the heat resistant borosilicate glass can crack with too great a temp. change too fast. CAUTION: Cool the flasks on the stir plates for a few minutes ( down to 140F or less) and then set them in cool water and finally add ice to the water bath a little at a time. Hearing that squeak of cracking glass in the flask containing 2 liters of your starter wort sucks! Losing the wort costs you about $3, losing the flask( at least from NB)costs about $40-$45.

After the boil I just move it to a cool part of the stove and let it sit for a couple minutes. Then I put it into just cold water, then add ice. Straight from the stove to ice water is a big hit.
