Guys,
TECH TOPIC: DIY STIR PLATE
DATE: OCTOBER 13TH, 2010
PLACE: JEREMY'S HOUSE
LOCATION:
1205 WALDENWOOD LN NE
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA 52402
PHONE: (319) 491 - 7268
Time for a tech meeting, before you start in on me yes I know the tech meeting is usually the 1st Wed of the month, however, I have been quite busy as of late.
I have actually been looking for new career opportunities. However, I have just (today) accepted a new position within RC Commercial systems. So I will be able to get back into the swing of things as life will be winding down to its usual pace again.
So while it is going to be a week late, we are going forward with the meeting, I will be ordering the parts tonight for the stir plates.
Sorry again it has taken so long to put the stir plate DIY together and that we didn't have a tech meeting last month.

Jeremy,
I appreciate the work you've put into this. I just want to throw out a reminder though that you don't need to do everything yourself. It's generous enough that you are hosting the meetings. There's several of us who are willing to step up and run a meeting if needed. We can always throw together a style tasting meeting at the last minute if there's not time to put together something more complicated.
I think it would be a good idea to delegate some of this so you don't get burned out.

Ok,
I just wanted to post, I ordered all the 'doo-dad's' for building the stir plates (everything except for the stir bars, Rob from Red Star has offered to donate stir bars for the event).
Don't have a final price as I have to divide out the total parts units ordered, as some componets there are spares for. Now, I know they will be just over $30 a peice most likely. However, this includes the everything but the yeast starter container. I did try to get some better parts so they last a little while, the magnets I got are 1" x 1/4" x 1/4", with their inertial mass they generate 13. something lbs of pull force each, so these should be plenty big enough to stir a 4 or 5 L starter considering eaching box will house two of these magnets.
One thing we may need is a couple of soldering irons if a couple of people have one around the house. I think I can dig one up, but I know I only have one if that.

How many stir plates do you have parts to make? I may get in on this meeting but I usually don't know if I am free until the day of the meeting. Even if I can't have a plate I may come to watch the build.

I am not going to be able to make it to the meeting. However, I still want my stir plate materials. Did you include boxes in the materials, Jeremy? I am pretty bummed about missing this.

I've got a good soldering iron that I'll bring to the meeting.

I got materials planning to make 10 units from counting up requests in this forum (including 2 for myself). However, with trying to account for spare parts required in case somebody fries one, there are enough parts to make 11 units. So there may be enough depending on the scenario.

Tim, yes, this accounts for the box, power supply, fan assembly, LM317 power adjustment assembly, knob & switch, and stir bar.

Thanks Jim & Jim,
The additional soldering irons will most certainly make the event go faster.

Kurt please bring a plastic bag with you, so that we can send your fingers that you burnt off with the soldering iron home with you afterwards!
